The next morning, Katie was somewhere between sleep and consciousness when she sensed someone by her bed. She felt her hand being lifted and pressed to firm lips. Her own lips curved into a smile. Her hand was gently placed back on the bed.

Katie opened her eyes, but instead of Andy by her side, she saw . . . “Ray?”

“Good morning.”

“What are you doing?” Had he actually kissed her hand, or had she dreamed that?

“Looking at you. I’m glad you’re still among the living. You could’ve been killed, and that would’ve broken my . . . my family’s heart.” He cleared his throat. “The girls adore you, you know.”

Katie found herself pulling away. “Shouldn’t you be at Wood U?”

“Sophie is minding the shop until I get back. It’s good for her—she enjoys being in charge.”

“That sounds like me.” She sighed. “All I want is to go home and be in charge of my own life once again.”

“I know. But if all goes according to plan, you’ll be there later today. Right?” He moved around to the chair on the other side of her bed and sat down. They looked at each other for long seconds. Ray’s expression was a mix of worry and . . . something else.

Katie broke the quiet. “So, do you know whether or not Carl ever confessed to killing Vonne?”

Ray shook his head. “He lawyered up and refused to say anything.”

“Do you believe Carl did it?”

“One thing my years in the Sheriff’s Office taught me was not to be too hasty in fixating on one particular suspect until concrete evidence is in hand. Everything they have on Carl Fiske with regard to Vonne’s death is pure conjecture—there’s not an iota of circumstantial evidence linking him to her murder.”

Katie’s eyes widened. “Are the deputies going to let him go?”

“No. They’re holding him on attempted murder charges.” His expression hardened. “And don’t you worry your stubborn little head. I’ll do everything in my power to protect you from that maniac.”

She wished that made her feel better.

“I mean it, Katie,” he said. “I won’t let him get within a hundred feet of you.”

Katie didn’t trust herself to speak. Ray—and the entire Sheriff’s Office, for that matter—could talk a good game, but she knew that no one could protect her if Carl wanted her dead badly enough.

Just then Andy and Margo burst into the room, and Katie’s heart practically jumped.

Ray’s eyes shot daggers at Andy. “Think of what Katie’s been through. Could you try not to scare her?”

“Oh, please.” Andy bent down to kiss Katie lightly on the lips. “Hi, Sunshine. How’re you feeling?”

“I’m okay.” Katie hazarded a glance at Margo to see what her reaction to the kiss had been and was grateful the older woman appeared to be unfazed.

“I brought you another track suit, dear,” Margo said. “The one you were wearing the other night was ruined, of course. I thought about bringing jeans, but I thought fleece would feel better against your bruised leg.
